Great Things are happening AT Dunkerton Community Schools!
The 12th graders in Ms. Miller's class have been reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. This is the story about Chris McCandless, who embarked on an incredible journey through the wilderness of Alaska after being estranged from his parents. This story includes many themes including loss, love, independence, independence, and conformity. As part of their final projects, students created a RAFT project. This project has the students choose their Role, Audience, Format, and Theme to create and show their knowledge and understanding of the text.

As a final project in 8A Computer Applications with Mr. Cusick, students are using Google Slides to create a Jeopardy Game. Their instructions were to come up with questions in 4 school subjects and 1 other category of their choosing. They were to then create slides and use transition and animation to enhance their interactive game. Over the last 3 days of the class the students are playing their games and are each getting a chance to be the host of their own game. So far the students are really enjoying it, and it has been a great opportunity to review things they are doing in their classes.
The Freshmen in Mrs. Corbin's class have started a Personal Narrative Unit. To begin, they discuss how personal narratives are often just a snapshot in our lives: just moments. To see this in a realistic way, Freshmen were sent out in groups to create a story based on one picture. They were to describe the story going on in the picture. They then had to send the picture to another group for them to decipher what story is behind each snapshot. We brought them back to share in a group discussion to see if the stories aligned.
The students in Mr. Cusick's class are thinking outside the box in how they use Google Docs. They are creating their own Coloring Books using their own theme and design. When the books are complete, they plan to give to several elementary teachers that have requested them. What a great way for the students to not only show their creativity, but also expand their use of technology!
In Mr. Cusick's Marketing class, the students participated in a "Sell Me This" activity. They were tasked with picking an item from the room and had to think about how they would sell that item to the class. The students really enjoyed this, even though some had to get out of their comfort zone and were limited on time to think of ideas for how they would promote their item.
In Mrs. Corbin's literacy class the students are working on Character analysis. As a part of their final project they are creating character murals. This assignment is paired with individual essays in which students must develop a thesis about an underlining issue with one of the characters in the book. The Pigman is a young adult novel written by Paul Zindel, first published in 1968. Zindel wrote a screenplay, adapting the book for the stage and screen, but it was not taken up by any film maker. This dual perspective novel gives the reader two different sides to a story about such an important man. Both Lorraine and John use their opposite personalities and together create a powerful narrative. This book would go on to win numerous awards, those including the New York Times Outstanding Book of 1968, the ALA Notable Children's Book 1940–1970 the Horn Book 1969 Fanfare Honor List.[1] Mrs. Pratt has been challenging her 6th graders to think outside the box. She has introduced the concept of area to the students using an inquiry based online curriculum. https://www.illustrativemathematics.org/ The students have been able to use Tangram shapes to explore how to create shapes will similar areas. They have focused on the decomposing and composing of regular shapes to explore area. The students have really enjoyed sharing their ideas and interacting with different solutions to problems. It's been awesome to watch them learn!
In Foods 1 and Foods 2, students will soon be having a cupcake or cake decorating contest. They are very excited and competitive, so their creations will no doubt be amazing! Maybe they can get some inspiration from some of the images below!
Seniors are creating their own Multi-Genre Research Compositions to demonstrate their learning and understanding of the time period they are reading about, in this particular instance students are reading about World War II events. Students have chosen a text and been divided into small groups. Each individual student and small groups created their own timeline of reading expectations and have participated in multiple literacy discussions in their small groups, and also sharing out with peers who are reading a different text. By allowing them to create this composition (MGRC), they will be able to show us a variety of skills and abilities that they have been working on all year. This project also allows them to be independent and create something that is meaningful to their learning. We have been deeply impressed with the insight and reflective conversations that the students have been having.
The 8th graders participated in a Fishbowl Discussion on Monday for the first time in Mrs. Bloomquist's class. It went phenomenally! Every single student participated in the discussion and a lot of insights were shared. There's an explanation in the video below! :) |
